Well, there are a few people that don’t like that and they aren’t all Mormons themselves. Deseret News recently had a great article about the responses of some people around the country.

Dr. Harold Pease, a history and political science professor at Taft College, was not nearly so light-hearted as he mused about “The Book of Mormon’s” creators admission that the show was designed to “gently mock Mormons.”

“Imagine a script designed to ‘gently mock’ Islam or its sacred book the Quran, or Christianity and its sacred book the Bible,” Pease wrote in the Bakersfield Californian. “The Middle East would be in flames, al-Qaida would grow and President Barack Obama would travel abroad on bended knee delivering speeches of apology.”

James Faulconer, who is a philosophy professor as well as the Richard L. Evans professor of Religious Understanding at BYU, provided an LDS perspective on “The Book of Mormon” in a column for Patheos.com. He pointed out that Mormons aren’t the only religious people who find themselves to be the target of comedic derision. “Catholic priests have come in for a good many cruel jokes recently,” Faulconer wrote. “Evangelical Christians get their fair share of mockery . . . Jews have been making jokes about themselves for a long time. We could learn from them, and we should laugh when others use humor to point out our idiosyncrasies.

It is for that reason I decided to post it here. I don’t think I will be going to the play, but at least I can not react in a hostile way, but let the “water roll of my back” so to speak. What are your thoughts?

The name of the guy singing and playing the guitar is Alex. He is very talented. He actually played at a wedding dinner I went to the other night. That is how I learned about him. He has done some other videos that are pretty funny. One is a cover for What’s My Name? featuring Monkey Man and Doll hands. It is very random and funny. I don’t know how he sang through the whole song without laughing.

In 2009 he arranged a remix of Love Story by Taylor Swift and Viva la Vida by Coldplay combined into one song called Love Story Meets Viva la Vida. It has become a hit on YouTube. He played it last night, but hasn’t worked out the legal details to play them both together in the concert so he had to stop and introduce the songs separately. He actually made it quite comical and it seemed like most of the audience had seen the Youtube video, so they knew how it sounds together.

I have included a video of Jon Schmidt playing Dumb Song taken by someone at a concert in London. He was wearing a bright red wig last night. He explained that in the wig there is a pad, so he won’t injure his head from hitting it against the piano so hard.

Not too shabby. Very corny, which fits the funny mormon genre. It’s funny how many California Girls Parodies there are which is unfortunate because the song is terrible and the video is disgusting. If you haven’t seen it, DON’T. This parody is pretty late to the game it would have been much more funny if it was done a few months ago. Now I’m just being too critical for a silly video. It is much better than I could do.
